TIL that the founder of Taco Bell originally ran a hamburger stand, but switched to tacos because he couldn't compete with a hamburger stand nearby. That stand was the first McDonald's.

>Mr. Bell never forgot the first taco buyer at Bell’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs...“He was dressed in a suit and as he bit into the taco the juice ran down his sleeve and dripped on his tie,” Mr. Bell recalled... “I thought, ‘Uh-oh, we’ve lost this one.’ But he came back, amazingly enough, and said, ‘That was good. Gimme another.’ ” Baller.

Opened the first Taco Bell with 4000 in 1962, sold to Pepsi in 1978 for 125 million. Not a bad return for 16 years. Edit: what are the odds in a country this size that McDonald's and Taco Bell started out in the same town

Sure, you could blame McDonald's, but I think his biggest mistake was naming his hamburger stand "Taco Bell"

Reminds me of one of my favorite places back home is called Biscuitville. They serve... biscuits and breakfast food. They were originally a pizza place (Pizzaville maybe?) but changed once they realized their biscuits were way more popular than their pizza. I think they've got 50 or so locations now.

I’m always amazed how in my home town someone will open a Mexican restaurant right next to another one that serves the same style of food.

*He started selling tacos at a taco stand named Taco-Tia at the price of 19 cents each from a side window. Between 1954 and 1955, he opened three Taco Tias in the San Bernardino area, eventually selling those restaurants and opening four El Tacos with a partner in the Long Beach area.* *In 1962, he decided to go solo and sold the El Tacos to his partner and opened his first Taco Bell. His company grew rapidly, and the 868-restaurant chain was later sold to PepsiCo in 1978 for $125 million in stock.* His restaurant names just kept getting better and better.

>Today, the company says, more than two billion tacos and a billion burritos are sold each year at more than 5,600 Taco Bell restaurants in the United States and around the world. Blame my family for "Taco Tuesday"

Funny how the original McDonalds was put out of business by the new McDonalds in the same town
